Florida Dental Hygiene Laws and Rules exam: the complete guide

Format

Computer-based, at a testing centre, in English. Every number the examiner publishes is in the table below, with the official page it was read from — nothing on this site states an exam figure we have not read there ourselves.

What is on it

Almost all of it comes from Chapter 466, Florida Statutes — the Dental Practice Act — and Division 64B5, Florida Administrative Code, the Board of Dentistry's own rules. Chapter 456, the general provisions for every health profession, is capped by rule at a small share of the paper.

Scope of practice, supervision levels, and delegable tasks (ss. 466.023, 466.0235, 466.024, Rule 64B5-16); grounds for discipline, penalties, and citations (s. 466.028, Rule 64B5-13); licensure, renewal, and continuing education (ss. 466.007–466.015, Rules 64B5-2 and 64B5-12); records, advertising, and dental labs; infection control (Rule 64B5-25); anesthesia rules that touch hygienists (s. 466.017).

Register and pay

You register with ADEX, not with the Board. Create an account on the ADEX candidate portal, choose the Florida Dental Hygiene Laws and Rules examination, pay the fee, and book a seat at a testing center. The state fees are separate: those go to the Florida Department of Health with your licensure application.

Scores and retakes

If you do not pass, you can register again and pay the same fee — the laws and rules exam has no waiting period of its own. What does have a clock on it is the ADEX series: every part has to be finished within the window below, counted from the day you start any part, or you retake the whole series.

Foreign-trained dentists

Florida lets graduates of a dental school qualify for the dental hygiene license (s. 466.007(2)(b)2.). You still need a national board — the NBDHE, or the National Board Dental Examination if you already passed it (s. 466.007(2)(c)2.a; Rule 64B5-2.0144) — plus the ADEX dental hygiene clinical exam, a Board-approved HIV/AIDS course (s. 466.007(3)(b)), and this laws and rules exam. Most candidates find the law exam the strangest part: legal vocabulary, in English, with distractors built to look right. That is exactly what RDHPass drills.

Read each rule once, then practice questions until you can spot the exact phrase the exam is testing. Take timed mock exams to build stamina and time management. Review what you missed the next day. Two to three weeks of one hour a day is typical.
